Police watchdogs are investigating claims by ex-footie Lee Makel that his ex-wife’s cop lover Gareth Blair “influenced” a probe into his actions after Makel discovered their affair.
The ex-Hearts and Livingston star claimed that Police Scotland didn’t consider childcare when they arrested him in the early hours over threatening texts he sent to his ex-wife Claire.
The Police Investigations and Review Commissioner is looking at 12 allegations by Lee Makel into his arrest that saw him charged with threatening and abusive behaviour towards Claire and Gareth Blair after they were caught having sex at an Edinburgh Park and Ride in 2019.
The Scottish Sun reports that the shamed former Chief Superintendent Gareth Blair has been accused of using his standing in the force to impact the inquiry.
A police source told the paper of Lee’s arrest: “There was no need for cops to take him from home at that time. It was a minor offence.
“Why they didn’t just ask Lee to make an appointment to attend a station with his lawyer is baffling.”
Blair was suspended and both he and Claire, 44, were charged with public indecency. He eventually quit Police Scotland and was fined £750. Her not guilty plea was accepted.
PIRC said: “A full complaint handling review is being conducted.” Police Scotland has been contacted for comment.
